WHY COLD PRESSED & EXTRA VIRGIN?
The seeds used to make our oil are simply squeezed and pressed to make the good stuff (that’s the ‘cold pressed’ bit). We do this to make sure we keep hold of the majority of the minerals, vitamins, enzymes and trace elements that make our oil the good choice.
We don’t add to it or take anything from it, and only ever use the oil that comes from the first and only pressing (that’s the ‘extra virgin’ bit). We should also add that ALL rapeseed grown in the UK is GM free, and are suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets. We’re gluten free too. Just for you.
NUTRITIONAL GOODIES
Littleseed Oil is full of natural goodness. With good levels of Omega 3 - an essential fatty acid that cannot be made in the body. This helps regulate heart rhythm, very important for normal growth in children and it also helps prevent our blood from clotting.
Our oil is also rich in Vitamin E – helping protect our DNA which promotes a healthy immune system. It’s a bit of a superhero really!
HIGH BURN POINT
Heating an oil past its smoke point isn’t good for anyone. Besides giving the food a burnt flavour and smell – that’s a substance called acrolein, it also releases harmful free radicals which can damage cells. Not a good thing.
Cold pressed rapeseed can be heated to around 220C which is much higher than extra virgin olive oil. We love that it makes our roast potatoes the crispiest and fluffiest around! Now that’s a good thing.
FAT FACTS
There’s no hiding from it. Rapeseed oil is a fat. In the main, our oil is made up of monounsaturated fats.
Monounsaturated fats (let’s call them the ‘good fats’) promote healthy cholesterol, which is a good thing in our book. Our oil contains less than 1% trans fats (yes, they’re the ‘bad fats’) because they can raise blood pressure, cholesterol levels and increase the risk of a heart attack.
Rapeseed oil also has the lowest saturated fat of any oil and half the saturated fat of olive oil.
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT
Nothing goes to waste at littleseed farm. When our presses gently squeeze our seeds to get the oil from them, we’re left with the seed husks which press into rapeseed meal. This by-product is a protein rich superfood for livestock and poultry, adding a great nutrient source to their feeding all year round!
WE’VE HAD A NOSY IN YOUR STORECUPBOARD!
How many different oils do you have in your store cupboard? Being a bit nosy we recently put out a survey looking into the buying and cooking habits of our customers and we found out that over 30% of you have a mix of oils for different purposes.
